Mari Pangestu was appointed as the minister of finance from the year 2004-2011. Later on, due to cabinet reshuffling, she was appointed to the newly created position of minister of Tourism and Creative Economy until 20 October 2014, when the term of the administration of president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.In the year 2012, the Indonesian Government nominated Mari Pangestu as a candidate for the position of Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) to succeed the incumbent Director-General, Pascal Lamy. The General Council of the WTO considered nominations from various countries in early 2013. In April 2013, Al three candidates from Asia-pacific were eliminated. Mari Pangestu issued a gracious statement accepting the outcome of the process.
